Revue, Fairmont Austin – Austin, Texas

I don’t make it often to this part of Austin, which usually results in once-a-year visits during SXSW. I was next to the Fairmont Austin and decided to stop inside for an injection of visual stimulus.

Of all the upscale hotels in Austin, the Fairmont is one of the newest, with the most dramatic and modern visual appeal. Historic hotels like the Driskill impress with old-world, formal architecture. The Fairmont is distinctly casual and unstuffy but exudes an upscale and playful vibe.

I headed to the rear of the hotel to the food hall area with six different restaurants. Called the Revue, it took extra effort to figure out the name of the place. Understandably, the hotel website showcased the food and not the architecture. But for me, the look of the place is nearly as important as the food.

The restaurant area looks the same as I last photographed it back in 2018 when the hotel opened. The technical image quality looks significantly better now with sharp, vibrant colors. I was in my take-everywhere Canon G7X Mark II phase back then, a compact camera that took decent pictures but ultimately wasn’t good enough for me. The full-frame Sony A7C lives up to my imaging standards in 2024. However, who knows what I’ll think about it six years from now, in 2030?
