Fireworks, Austin Country Club – Austin, Texas

Admittedly, I was a little lazy this Fourth of July. I attended and photographed a community parade and cookout, but not much more. Luckily, I had a picture from last year that worked perfectly — this was by design.

I shot this photograph of the Austin Country Club fireworks in 2023 from a new vantage point that I originally planned in 2022. Instead of shooting from the bridge you see in this picture, as I’ve done for years, I opted to climb the cliffs overlooking the scene. I hoped to make this image in 2022, but they canceled the show .

Last year, with my then-new Sony A7C and Sony 24mm f2.8, along with the tripod, I braved the climb to make this picture. I’m really pleased with the way this turned out, and I was able to create the image I envisioned in my head. While not perfect, it’s good enough that I didn’t feel compelled to make another version. Hence the laziness. I could’ve returned to the bridge, but that didn’t seem exciting.

What I should really do next is go downtown and shoot the fireworks with the skyline as a backdrop. I’ve never attempted this, fearing the long wait and the crowds. If I feel motivated, I may someday.
