Lawmen: Bass Reeves, SXSW 2024 – Austin, Texas

Rounding out the Paramount+ sets at this year’s SXSW, we have Lawmen: Bass Reeves, which had the most elaborate setup. Located in the front of the 2nd floor, it featured a higher level of detailing and even a bar, though I don’t recall the special drink they had for this area.

Unlike Survivor, which I’ve heard of but never watched, I was totally unaware of Lawmen: Bass Reeves. Also, unlike Survivor, which has been around for 24 years, Bass Reeves is a mini-series in its first year. This American Western TV show centers around Bass Reeves, the first African American Deputy U.S. Marshall west of the Mississippi River. So, he was a real person.

This Britannica article talks about Bass Reeves’ successful career and interestingly mentions that some speculate that the Lone Ranger TV series might be based on him.

The photography setup was fancier than the other sets, many of which just had picture-taking kiosks. This setup features a real dedicated camera connected to a laptop with supplemental lighting to make customized Wanted posters associated with the Old West.
