Modest Architecture, Show Barn, Rodeo Austin – Austin, Texas

Waking past the fluttering flags showcasing carnival food, I made it to the giant structure housing the livestock. I called it a barn in yesterday’s post, but that was a guess. As a city slicker originally from New York City, I’m the last person who would know anything about farms and animals.

To satisfy my curiosity, I looked up the Travis County Expo Center and confirmed it’s a barn, specifically a show barn. It’s a basic run-down structure with open sides holding up a metal roof. It’s perfectly serviceable for farm animals, however. Inside, I found this detail, which I liked.

I appreciate the simplicity and honesty of the signage. Nothing here is fancy, which is part of the attraction, the complete opposite of SXSW’s highly staged marketing events. I find odd satisfaction in balancing the architectural elements for a tight composition.
