Damn Good, Torchy’s Tacos – Austin, Texas

It’s been a while since I met my friend Dave, a fine photographer and blogger, who has been a serious amateur longer than me. We caught up during the photo walk and decided to have a light dinner afterward.

Torchy’s Tacos, an Austin institution, was nearby on 2nd Street, a block east of the Butterfly Bridge, and was perfect for our fast-casual food needs. I didn’t shoot the outside that night, but documented it two years ago on my Fujifilm GFX 50s II.

I’m amazed that the Torchy’s Empire now extends to 15 states and once started as a humble food trailer here in Austin. Many of them don’t have a bar, but this one does. The interior is more sophisticated, possibly because it’s located downtown. The one near my house is much more humble and down to earth.

Two Tacos, Torchy's Tacos - Austin, Texas

I had two tacos, though I don’t remember their names. Austin is known for tacos, and there are many competitors. I often go to a place called Taco Deli instead. Many of the Austin taco joints, including Torchy’s, are hipster tacos and are different from the traditional Mexican variety.

Long Table, Torchy's Tacos - Austin, Texas

In front of me was this long, unoccupied table and the bar beyond. The Tacos were great, the architecture interesting, and catching up with a friend was priceless.
